Shelter in place is stressful for all of us. Especially for moms. Most of us want to be more relaxed and "roll with it," but it seems like there are 643 reasons why we can't.

Slowing down and appreciating where you are is easier than you think. It doesn't require a lot of effort to become a more relaxed parent and SEE your situation differently.  But we're so busy worrying about what's next, it's hard to focus on what’s in front of us. And by the time we climb into bed, we're second-guessing our actions that day and wishing for a do-over. But tomorrow usually winds up the same. And this hamster wheel of emotions is seriously anxiety-inducing.

And yet, I believe this is our moment.

Being forced to stay indoors, practically tethered to one another is an opportunity for future change. So when they let us out of our cages, when we come back home, we will appreciate who we are and who we are with at a new, mind-blowing level.

And here's where photography comes in.

I've been frustrated with the monotony and isolation like many of you, but I have been able to ground myself a little every day with my camera. The first time I picked it up was to photograph my two very own kids both trying to be okay with our new circumstances. They clearly weren't. My heart hurt, but I knew I would want to remember these moments. These mundane scenes play on repeat day in and day out.

That first shutter click gave me hope. It alleviated my stress because it forced me to slow down, look for the shot, and tell the story. This is EXACTLY what I do for my clients - document what they might feel is ordinary, but I see as extraordinary. This is what's going to save my sanity. I may spin out of control now and then (okay, every day, but whatever), but slowing down to take at least one photo is often enough to salvage a potentially bad day. At the very least it forces a few moments of mindfulness and gratitude.

And with that epiphany, this new, FREE online photography class was born. Designed specifically for shelter in place, but intended to stay with us long after.
