Empty Nest: How to find purpose beyond motherhood

WHAT DO TO WHEN YOUR KIDS MOVE OUT

If you Google how to handle the quiet or boredom after your kids leave the house, I bet a bajillion dollars that you’d find a bunch of articles telling you to take up a hobby.

The same articles will also suggest you hang out with friends and practice self-care.

Allll of those things are helpful, but what do you do if you feel empty or lost?

Do you need help filling your days or finding fulfillment? 🤔

For more than four years, I’ve researched how we can live more meaningful lives. Here’s a simple exercise that might help you find new passions and maybe even purpose.

1.— Make a list of 20-25 things that you’d like to explore.

✓ Think about things you used to do before having kids.
✓ What have you seen people do online that made you a tinge envious?
✓ How about things you’ve told yourself you’d try when you had more time?

2.— Once you have your list, experiment with each item.

There will be a small handful that stands out. Start with those. Who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky and find a passion or two right away. If not, NBD. Keep going. You might wind up with a fun hobby.

👉 If you want to hone in on your purpose, I broke down the process in a video here on Instagram and again here on TIkTok.

Passion and purpose can find you randomly, but most times, they need some help.

P.S. If you’re worried about what to do when your kids head off to college or move out to start their next adventure, I have a 5-week workshop that can help.
